Making a sampler
In the past, needlework (sewing and embroidery) was a very important part of a young girl’s education. Making a sampler at home or at school was a way of learning and practising the many different stitches and patterns.
Often the sampler would show things about you and your life. For example, it might have the names of your family or a picture of your school or your house. Sometimes a personal or religious message is written on the sampler. The letters of the alphabet and numbers were also common.
