More Samplers from East Lothian
East Lothian Museums Service holds a number of interesting samplers. Some on display and some in storage. Here is a selection of some which are not currently touring with the exhibition.
This sampler was made by Catherine Brown of Haddington when she was eight.
This is a rectangle of coarse cloth stitched with alphabetic exercises in alternating red and green threads and horizontal dividing bands. The final row reads CATH BROWN 8 Y.
As you may have guessed by now, clicking on the image will give you a larger version.
Other East Lothian samplers: by Agnes Rennie; two by Margaret Yorkston ; the last by Ann Gilrye. This final one is from the family of John Muir, the famous early conservationist, and was hung in his house in California.
The Gilrye can now be seen in the John Muir Birthplace Museum in their hometown of Dunbar, Scotland.
